Make Your Data Useful

Persönliche Daten sollen auch den Menschen selbst nützen.

Use a small set of mobility or household energy data to answer your own question and turn the result into a practical next step.

Who it is for.

Curious learners and households interested in making everyday data useful.

What to bring.

Bring a mobility or energy export. Use a supplied sample when access, format or privacy makes personal data unsuitable.

What you take away.

  • A documented dataset and one clear chart answering a bounded personal question.
  • A short findings note distinguishing observations, possible explanations and gaps.
  • A practical next-step plan together with data storage and sharing choices.

The challenge.

Personal data often benefits those collecting it. Explore what it could help you understand: when energy use rises, for example, or which journeys have workable alternatives.

What you do.

  1. Choose a question and inspect a prepared dataset for dates, units, missing records and sensitive details. Keep only the fields necessary for the analysis.

  2. Use a spreadsheet or simple local tool to explore a pattern. Check it against the underlying records and identify explanations that the data alone cannot distinguish.

  3. Prepare a personal experiment or a question for a provider. Decide where data should remain, what may be shared and what to delete afterwards.

Show what you have learned.

Reproduce one finding from the records and explain whether it is strong enough to guide your proposed next step.
